Things to do for Younger Children
Have fun with Reading, Spelling and Numbers
Reading
Listening to a child read is one of the nicest things there is to do, as well as one of the most important. Children, it's great if you can read out loud to a grown-up every night. This will help you with your reading! You and the grown-up can both ask and answer questions about the book you are reading. How much of the story can you remember?
> Use letter sounds and pictures to help you with your reading.
> Try to find a book with poems in it. Read a poem to someone or ask them to read it to you.
> Read an information book this week.
> Can you find a book to read which has words in it that rhyme?
Two favourites of mine are 'The Gruffalo' and 'Commotion in the Ocean'.
Spelling
Practise all the letter sounds that you have learned at school. Find 3-letter words with the middle letter 'e' such as 'peg' and 'jet'. Find 3-letter words with the middle letter 'i' e.g. bin, lip Find 3-letter words with the middle letter 'u' e.g. cut, Mum Find 3-letter words with the middle letter 'a' or 'o'. Hi children! Here are some 3 letter words that I found! Which words can you find?
Also, look for sight words in your reading book.
Numbers
Here are some things to do with numbers and counting that you can try!
> Can you find numbers 1 to 20 when you are out and about? > Sort coins out at home. > If you see a number (1-10) can you add one more or even two more? > Can you tell someone the days of the week in order? > When you are in the bath fill a big container using a smaller container. How many did you need to use? > If you see a number (1-20) can you take one away?
