Thank you for your patience whilst we update the website for the new school year.  Hope you all have a good half-term holiday.

Thomas the Bear's Fun with Spelling Page

First of all, here are some things that you girls and boys in Year 1 can do.

Investigate long vowel phonemes 'oa' and 'ow'.  What sound do they make?  How many words containing these patterns can you spell. Here are some that I thought of: boat, road, soap, blow, grow, show.

Investigate the long vowel phonemes 'ai' and 'ay'.  How many words can  you find which contain these patterns?  (train, paint, nail, tray, play, stay)  Use 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' to spell these words.

What sound is made by 'igh', 'y' and 'ie'?  How many words containing these patterns can you spell?  For example try, high, pie.

Investigate the long vowel phonemes 'ee' and 'ea'.  How many words can you find which contain these patterns?  (seed, feet, three, pea, meat, team).  Use LCWC to spell these words.

This next set are things that Year 2 boys and girls can try.

How many words can you spell which contain 'ough'?  Sort the words into groups dependent upon the sound that the -ough makes.

Find and spell as many words as you can which contain the split digraph 'a_e'.

Here are some that I thought of: make, aeroplane, spade, and finally, cake. (Mmmm - I love cakes!)

Use a dictionary to find the meaning of new words.  Learn to spell these using 'Look Cover Write Check'.

How many words can you find which contain the phoneme 'ear'?  Does 'ear' always make the same sound? Think about words like fear, heard, and (of course!) bear.
